Summary

This special boxed set includes the first three novels in Andrzej Sapkowski's New York Times bestselling epic fantasy saga -- the books that introduced the world to THE WITCHER and inspired the hit Witcher video games。

"The universe of Sapkowski's The Witcher is one of the most detailed and best-explored in modern fantasy。" ---B&N

For over a century, humans, dwarves, gnomes, and elves have lived together in relative peace。 But times have changed, the uneasy peace is over, and now the races are fighting once again。 The only good elf, it seems, is a dead elf。

Geralt of Rivia, the cunning assassin known as The Witcher, has been waiting for the birth of a prophesied child。 This child has the power to change the world - for good, or for evil。

As the threat of war hangs over the land and the child is hunted for her extraordinary powers, it will become Geralt's responsibility to protect them all - and the Witcher never accepts defeat。

In Blood of Elves, The Time of Contempt, and Baptism of Fire, Sapkowski brings a fresh new voice to fantasy fiction, creating something wholly dark and exciting in this world of fairy tales and witchers。

I fell in love with the world of The Witcher during my playthrough of The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt。 Learning that the game was based on a series of books immediately piqued my interest, as "the book is always better"。 In this case, I haven't had reason to say that's true, however。 This boxed set picks up after two short story collections about Geralt of Rivia, The Witcher, in his younger days。 The short stories create a remarkable tapestry of action, political espionage, and romance all the whil I fell in love with the world of The Witcher during my playthrough of The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt。 Learning that the game was based on a series of books immediately piqued my interest, as "the book is always better"。 In this case, I haven't had reason to say that's true, however。 This boxed set picks up after two short story collections about Geralt of Rivia, The Witcher, in his younger days。 The short stories create a remarkable tapestry of action, political espionage, and romance all the while developing Geralt's character。 His character is special to me as an anti-hero because he rejects much of the blood and gore, dark and gritty characters that emerged from the 80's and still plague comic books today。 He is certainly rough around the edges and has a myriad of faults。 Yet he is good and honest。 He is fallible。 The life he leads isn't because he's out to show everyone how it really is in "the real world"。 Rather birthed from rough circumstances and raised in tougher ones, he does what he must to get by with his eyes on a better life。Sapkowski shows growing mastery in these novels as they go on。 To me, the lull of the series is in Baptism of Fire, which is then immediately remedied in Tower of Swallows during a clever, action-filled plot。 Should you consider starting this series, this box set was a cost-effective and wonderful way for me to get started myself。 。。。more

Man, talk about a great beginning, boring middle, and awesome end。 In this case, that's three books that are a cause of that。 Blood of Elves is pretty awesome。 I really love Ciri's development and Geralt's mentorship of her, but then Yennefer took Ciri under her wing。 Then I couldn't care less。 Time of Contempt was PAINFUL to get through。 Nothing happened until one big world-shattering moment, which Baptism of Fire took and completely made it great。 Baptism of Fire was awesome because it focuses Man, talk about a great beginning, boring middle, and awesome end。 In this case, that's three books that are a cause of that。 Blood of Elves is pretty awesome。 I really love Ciri's development and Geralt's mentorship of her, but then Yennefer took Ciri under her wing。 Then I couldn't care less。 Time of Contempt was PAINFUL to get through。 Nothing happened until one big world-shattering moment, which Baptism of Fire took and completely made it great。 Baptism of Fire was awesome because it focuses mostly on Geralt, and that made the book worth it。 I'll read it again, especially after finishing the series, but Time of Contempt really brought my love of the series down。 I recommend a read-through。 。。。more

Well, I am finally done with this boxed set。 I am not sure why so many people like it, actually it was quite cumbersome to read。 The overall plot is boring and slow paced。 And actually, the Witcher is just a sidekick for way cooler characters。 Wonder why they made a show and games about him and not about eg Ciri or Yennefer。

Review 4。4 starsI confess to being engrossed – probably obsessed – by Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher universe。 It’s a fantasy world unlike the Norse/Anglo-Saxon/Celtic one I grew up absorbing。 Trying to review the books out of their overall context is hard。 They don’t read as standalone novels, although each one has a different style in how the tale is told and in emphasis, whether in who is the primary character or the overarching theme。 Each novel reads differently, sustaining the epic length of Review 4。4 starsI confess to being engrossed – probably obsessed – by Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher universe。 It’s a fantasy world unlike the Norse/Anglo-Saxon/Celtic one I grew up absorbing。 Trying to review the books out of their overall context is hard。 They don’t read as standalone novels, although each one has a different style in how the tale is told and in emphasis, whether in who is the primary character or the overarching theme。 Each novel reads differently, sustaining the epic length of the saga。 I admire Sapkowski’s ability to change styles – and applaud the translator。 One crucial piece of advice: read the books in sequence and start not with Blood of Elves, but with The Last Wish https://www。goodreads。com/book/show/4。。。 –– as past events are key to the unfolding saga。Blood of Elves: https://www。goodreads。com/book/show/6。。。Geralt may be a Witcher, a hired monster slayer, but his challenge is now the Child of Destiny, the Princess Ciri who escaped the destruction of Cintra。 There are monsters, but unlike the two earlier initial books of short stories, his concern is personal and more of the monsters are human。 Politics and racial tensions are simmering。 Ciri and those who care for her have become the focus, not just Geralt。 Learning about the Witcher universe is a learning process – for us and Ciri - and the jigsaw shimmers into view。。。although not all at once。Some readers expected more about Geralt, but the key to his destiny and others is now Ciri。 So, other characters play crucial roles – like the sorceress Yennefer, Geralt’s on-off love。 A second war between the Empire of Nilfgaard and the Northern Realms is brewing – and it helps to know more of the background from the shorts。 The reader is given some clues and hints, but explaining the intricacies, the twists, the deceptions of politics – and history – will take a few books。 It’s complex as in real life。Yes, there are ‘pages of dialogue’ and Sapkowski indulges in writing chunks of text, sometimes verging on the didactic。 Yet, I was engrossed and never stopped read – and adding to my knowledge of a richly-painted and crafted world。 Having met a few familiar characters from the shorts – and played Witcher games – I was keen to read more about the Child of Destiny, about whether this child of prophecy will save the world or herald its destruction。 The Time of Contempt: https://www。goodreads。com/book/show/1。。。The story from Blood of Elves develops with increasing complexity as more players get involved – which means more POVs and threads。 For those who want a Witcher slaying monsters, beware。 Be prepared for political intrigue instead, when a coup threatens the Wizard's Guild, war breaks out across the lands, and everyone knows what’s best for Ciri。Including Geralt, but a serious injury leaves the Witcher fighting for his life, while Ciri, in whose hands the world's fate rests, has vanished。 The threads, twists, deceptions, double-crossings, intrigues, and intricacies are spreading – like a disease。 And yes, there are chunks of Sapkowski’s trademark sermonic yet instructive info-dumps。 I welcomed them as I’m open to indulging in his world-building, but I recognise many aren’t。 But then I’m an addict who even plays the Witcher games, so I dive down research rabbit holes with little prompting。 Anyway, this continuation builds on the previous book – in a more varied and engrossing style。 There are distinct approaches to the storytelling, depending on the protagonist – and there are some more now。 We get a chance to see events from various angles, depending on the character’s allegiances to one of the Northern Realms, the Nilfgaard Empire, the non-human Scoia’tael, or those caught up in the struggles。 Some are poignant and tragic, like a King's messenger called Aplegatt – one of my favourite chapters。 Trying to remain neutral is hard, especially for Geralt。 “It’s incredible,’ the Witcher smiled hideously, ‘how much my neutrality outrages everybody。’”The portrayal of the non-humans is not idealised either – be they dwarves, gnomes, elves, or dryads。 They may wage a bloody struggle against humans, but I understand why they fight and for what since Sapkowski portrays their dilemma in detail。The book has a cliff-hanger, but the author’s impudently clever explanation made me chuckle。 And I had to read the next book。Baptism of Fire: https://www。goodreads。com/book/show/1。。。Onto Book 3 of this Witcher set and the weaving threads bring in new characters - ones I know from the Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt game and the Gwent card-game。 As I read more and more, engrossed, I was wishing I'd bought the next two books。Anyway, the plot layers are growing。 Now that dark times have fallen upon the world, Geralt is helpless until he has recovered from his injuries – in Brokilon, home of the dryads。 While war rages across all the lands, the future of magic is under threat and those sorcerers who survive are determined to protect it。 It's an impossible situation in which to find one girl - Ciri, the heiress to the throne of Cintra。 She has vanished - until a rumour places her in the Nilfgaard court, preparing to marry the Emperor。However, the reader knows differently, although Ciri is struggling to survive and too far from those like Geralt, who want to help her。 Her story takes disturbing turns as she stumbles from one challenge to another, discovering innate skills。 Her ‘adventures’ are told in a contrasting style to the events of those searching/pursuing her。More characters are introduced with varying agendas and idiosyncrasies – distinct too…with a few forgivable tropes。 However, most are complex and deceptive。 Never trust first appearances。 Geralt adds to his traveling companions at various crossroads, and I welcomed meeting Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy, having encountered Regis in the Witcher 3。 Let’s just say Regis, the intellectual barber-surgeon of Dillingen is one of the best characters in all the books – comparable in a way to Borch Three Jackdaws alias Villentretenmerth from one of the earlier short stories。There are the expected passages that some readers skip as didactic sermonising – or bad writing – and others like me relish as informative。 There are other wonderful descriptive passages – as in the other books – but then I’m a sucker for purple prose if it captivates in its craft。 Easily satisfied?By the expected/foreshadowed climax/cliff-hanger, I was wondering where the Rats would end up and whether Geralt would find Ciri before chaos ensued。 So, I spent my money and I’m now reading the final two books in the series – but those reviews must wait。Having given up recently on another trilogy, as scenes felt repetitive – copy & pasted almost – this set of books was an engrossing read。 This isn’t my number one fantasy saga/series, but for all its faults, I rate it for what it adds to the genre。 My favourite isn’t even any of the obvious ones。 [See the When Women Were Warriors Series https://www。goodreads。com/series/4635。。。]Story – five starsSetting/World-building – five starsCharacters – five starsDiversity – four starsStructure – four starsReadability – four starsEditing – four starsOriginally published at: https://rolandclarke。com/2020/06/30/w。。。 。。。more

A great trilogy! OK, lets dive in and talk about this 3 book boxed set because that is how I got it and read it。 Briefly:What I liked - Excellent writing sprinkled with dry humor that always worked well。 Great world building in this fictional setting。What I didn't like - These three books were very much about everything but the Witcher - Geralt of Rivia。 I wanted more monster slaying but so much of the books had to do with other main characters and their development。 All well done and interesting but it took me OK, lets dive in and talk about this 3 book boxed set because that is how I got it and read it。 Briefly:What I liked - Excellent writing sprinkled with dry humor that always worked well。 Great world building in this fictional setting。What I didn't like - These three books were very much about everything but the Witcher - Geralt of Rivia。 I wanted more monster slaying but so much of the books had to do with other main characters and their development。 All well done and interesting but it took me away from learning more about Geralt。Certainly 4 solid stars and a very good read。 。。。more

It's been awhile since I've rabidly devoured a series of books, but the Witcher series has awakened that thrill of reading other classic fantasy novels like Lord of the Rings and the Game of Thrones series。 In fact, as I complete the third book in this collection, I'm still waiting for some similarities to those other books to come to the forefront。 It's definitely not the same, and it some cases the Witcher series is more infuriating to read。The Witcher series has adventure, battles and unique It's been awhile since I've rabidly devoured a series of books, but the Witcher series has awakened that thrill of reading other classic fantasy novels like Lord of the Rings and the Game of Thrones series。 In fact, as I complete the third book in this collection, I'm still waiting for some similarities to those other books to come to the forefront。 It's definitely not the same, and it some cases the Witcher series is more infuriating to read。The Witcher series has adventure, battles and unique characters, so anyone who likes that in their fantasy reading will enjoy these books。 How Sapkowski differs from those other books is that he likes to take his time through conversation。 The band of main characters could be on their way somewhere and Sapkowski will have them sit by a campfire and talk for pages and pages about some philosophical topic。 It's clearly an effort to build up character development, which is certainly appreciated, but sometimes one just wants to get on with things。 LOTR and GOT books built up characters but knew when to proceed to the next part of the adventure。 Sapkowski is in no hurry。 The third book suffers a lot from this casual pace, as if the author is trying to save all the good stuff for the next book。The character of the Witcher also drives me crazy, for though the pictures on the covers of the books showcase a real warrior drowning in danger, the books tell a different story。 At first the Witcher is moody and short of words ("Blood of Elves"), giving the impression that he might be quietly wise and tactical, but by the time one gets to "Baptism of Fire" the Witcher comes across as chatty and incompetent as a leader。 Sometimes I just want him to cut loose or give off the impression that he knows what he's doing 。。。 but no, he's just another guy caught up in a war。*Definitely* read "The Last Wish" and "Sword of Destiny" first, as one will get to know the background of the Witcher as a real monster killer。 Those books certainly set the tone of who the Witcher is, how dangerous he can be, and how he grew into the legend that he is。 The stories in this boxed set hint at the Witcher's abilities but there's barely any monsters to be worried about, so anyone who starts with this set could think he's just another ordinary knight but with white hair。 There's still plenty of great scenes and interesting events, (thus, giving it four stars), so these books are definitely worth reading if one likes the first couple of books。 However, don't be surprised if the tedium of reading about various meetings and discussions that descend heavily upon the third book make you look up, take a breath, and wonder how you got this far。 。。。more

This is supposed to be read after the last wish apparently。 I read first this series I haven't read the last wish yet。 This is very dark and very graphic series。 It needs a lot of breaks and you have to stick it through。 This is supposed to be read after the last wish apparently。 I read first this series I haven't read the last wish yet。 This is very dark and very graphic series。 It needs a lot of breaks and you have to stick it through。 。。。more

Uneven。 Great moments interspersed with tedious and meandering politics that do little in the overall story。

Only negative is that at times the author goes into too much detail into irrelevant story tasks。 "Fillers"。 There is several bolks that have >30 consecutive pages of tangentle conversation。 I initially played the game and jumped into the books considering Netflix is making it a show。 Only negative is that at times the author goes into too much detail into irrelevant story tasks。 "Fillers"。 There is several bolks that have >30 consecutive pages of tangentle conversation。 I initially played the game and jumped into the books considering Netflix is making it a show。 。。。more

Blood of Elves: If it wasn't for the Game Witcher 3, I would have had a different approach to how I imagine Geralt。 Probably more in touch with this feeling than what I thought。 Time of Contempt: It's the "in between" book of the series。 It felt as that。 The story progressed yet a lot of the original questions are yet to be answered and new ones has come through。The journey of the child Ciri is random and yet she discovers a bit of herself in every turn。 Geralt struggles between political powers Blood of Elves: If it wasn't for the Game Witcher 3, I would have had a different approach to how I imagine Geralt。 Probably more in touch with this feeling than what I thought。 Time of Contempt: It's the "in between" book of the series。 It felt as that。 The story progressed yet a lot of the original questions are yet to be answered and new ones has come through。The journey of the child Ciri is random and yet she discovers a bit of herself in every turn。 Geralt struggles between political powers he doesn't want to be involved and the world is boiling with war。On a side note, a map of the region would have been nice to have。Baptism of Fire:Each character experience his or her baptism in a difference way。 Unquestionable the result for each is wisdom and temperance。 A more emotional journey than previous books。 Here the author finds a way to connect with more realistic and humane struggles of the characters。 So far the one I liked the most。 。。。more
